The Five Parts of AURIS

What the five letters of AURIS stand for, in plain English, and what each part asks of you in practice.

AURIS is five parts, and they are always the same five: Awareness, Understanding, Regulation, Identity and Stability. Identity drives behaviour, so the parts build in that order rather than jumping straight to what you should do differently.

Awareness means noticing what is true, without judgement. It is not a diagnosis and it is not a decision. It is the ordinary work of saying what is actually happening, including the parts that are uncomfortable to admit, before trying to change any of it.

Understanding means making sense of the patterns behind the feeling. A reaction that seems out of proportion usually is not, once you can see what it is attached to. Understanding is what turns a bad week from something random into something that has a shape.

Regulation means building capacity for hard days, not avoiding them. Hard days will still come. The aim is to be able to stay in one, keep hold of yourself and come back, rather than arranging a life in which nothing difficult is ever allowed to happen.

Identity means holding a self that is honest and your own. Not a job title, not a role somebody else gave you, and not the version of you that other people find easiest. It is being able to describe yourself in words you actually recognise.

Stability means acting from a steady, recognisable place. It is the point at which the other four stop being an exercise and start being how you live: the same person on a difficult day as on an easy one.

The five parts are not a ladder you finish. Most people move back and forth between them, and returning to Awareness after years of Stability is a normal thing to do rather than a step backwards.

If you would rather start with one part than all five, start with Awareness. Everything after it is easier to do once you can say plainly what is true.
