Three jobs since leaving

Many service leavers move through several civilian jobs in the first years after leaving. If that is you, this guide is not about writing a better CV. It is about why the jobs may not be the real problem.

If you need help right now, in the UK

Samaritans are free on 116 123, 24 hours a day. The veterans helpline is free on 0808 802 1212. If life is at immediate risk, call 999.

It may not be the job

In service, work gave you a role, a team, a clear purpose and a place in the order of things. A civilian job usually gives you a contract and a task list. When the gap between the two is large, even a good job can feel wrong.

Leaving that job can bring short relief, and then the same feeling returns in the next one. AURIS calls this pattern crisis churn.

Questions to ask before the next move

What did I actually miss in the last job: the people, the purpose, the structure or the respect?

Who am I outside work, and does anything in my week reflect that?

Am I moving towards something, or only away from how I feel?

Where to start

The free Crisis Churn course looks at this pattern directly. Introduction to AURIS explains the five pillars behind it: Awareness, Understanding, Regulation, Identity and Stability. Both are self-paced.

For practical job and money support, the veterans support page points to verified services. AURIS is not a crisis service or a recruitment service. If you are not sure where to start, contact us.
