Change isn’t the problem.

By the end you will be able to recognise why change unsettles you and choose a steadier response to it.

Part of the AURIS approach to identity, stability and human development.

  • Foundation
  • Free
  • Certificate on completion
  • About 45 minutes

Learn why our minds resist uncertainty and discover practical ways to move through change with greater confidence and clarity.

This course is free. You will be asked to sign in or create a free account, then the first lesson opens.

Understanding Change cover: one path running through four seasons from blossom to snow, beside the words Change is part of life.

Who this course is for

“I am good at my job and I still do not want to do it any more.”

Being capable at something is not the same as it still fitting who you are. Start with why moving on feels this hard.

Where this course fits

Where it sits
Step 4 of the four course Foundation, the free starting sequence in AURIS Academy.
What usually comes before
Five-Day Reset comes first in the Foundation. See that course.
What usually comes next
Identity Foundations is next in the Life and Role Change pathway. The applied core of the framework, worked pillar by pillar.

A pathway is a suggested order, not a requirement. Nothing here has to be bought to make this course work.

The pathways it belongs to

  • Part of the Life and Role Change pathway: Changed career, made redundant or retired, and you still do not feel like yourself?

A pathway is a suggested order, not a requirement. This course can be taken on its own.

About this course

A free course on psychological adaptation: why the brain resists change, how habits are built and kept, and how to look forward without pretending.

What you will learn

  • Explain why change is difficult for everyone
  • Describe what the brain is doing when it resists
  • Build a habit using cue, action and repetition
  • Write a realistic plan for the next six months

Why this matters

Primary pillar: Stability. This course builds Stability by showing how habits actually form, so the structure you put in place is built to survive a bad week rather than only a good one.

Course curriculum

4 lessons. The lesson content itself opens once you start the course.

  1. Lesson 1 · about 11 minutes

    Change Happens To Everyone

Recognise that facing major change is universal, not a sign of poor planning.

    • Recognise change as universal
    • Separate chosen change from imposed change
  2. Lesson 2 · about 11 minutes

    Why The Brain Resists Change

Understand resistance to change as a prediction mechanism, not a character flaw.

    • Describe prediction and threat in plain words
    • Stop reading resistance as weakness
  3. Lesson 3 · about 11 minutes

    Building New Habits

Learn the cue-plus-repetition mechanics of habit formation, and how to make a new habit survive a bad day.

    • Attach a new action to an existing cue
    • Set a version small enough to survive
  4. Lesson 4 · about 12 minutes

    Looking Forward

Set one realistic direction and identify the single next step, not the whole route.

    • Set a realistic six month direction
    • Choose the next step rather than the whole route

What is included

  • Audio narration
  • Guided reflections
  • Interactive exercises
  • Practical activities
  • Assessment
  • Portfolio work
  • Certificate on completion

Common questions

Is Understanding Change really free?
Yes. It is free to enrol on and stays free. There is no trial, no card and no upgrade needed to finish it, and you only need a free account so your progress and certificate stay with you.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes. Finishing the course issues an AURIS Certificate of Completion in your name. It records your learning. It is not a qualification, accreditation or licence to practise, which is what the separate AURIS Practitioner Certification is for.
How long does it take, and is it self-paced?
It is self-paced. Once you enrol, every lesson is open, there is no deadline and nothing expires, and the course is designed to take about 45 minutes in total.
Do I need to do anything before this course?
