AURIS Identity Adaptation Index

The six questions AURIS asks, why each one is there, and what is still missing before any of it can be called validated.

Status

In development. This instrument has not been validated. Its scores describe how a person rates themselves at a point in time and must not be read as a clinical measure or as evidence of an outcome.

The items

Each item is answered on a 0 to 10 scale. The Index is the mean of the answered items, expressed out of 100, and is only meaningful alongside the person's own earlier answers.

  1. 1. Identity · Identity

Right now, I have a clear sense of who I am.

Holding a self that is honest and your own.

  2. 2. Purpose · Understanding

I have a clear sense of purpose and direction in my life.

Making sense of the patterns behind the feeling.

  3. 3. Belonging · Identity

I feel that I belong to a community, organisation or group where I feel valued.

Holding a self that is honest and your own.

  4. 4. Confidence · Regulation

I feel confident in my ability to adapt to change and move forward.

Building capacity for hard days, not avoiding them.

  5. 5. Stability · Stability

Overall, I feel emotionally and psychologically stable.

Acting from a steady, recognisable place.

  6. 6. Identity Adaptation · Awareness

To what extent do you recognise the person you are becoming?

Noticing what is true, without judgement.

What the items reach, and what they do not

The framework has five pillars. Six self-rated items cannot cover all five evenly, and this is where they currently sit.

A · Awareness

Noticing what is true, without judgement.

Reached by: Identity Adaptation.

U · Understanding

Making sense of the patterns behind the feeling.

Reached by: Purpose.

R · Regulation

Building capacity for hard days, not avoiding them.

Reached by: Confidence.

I · Identity

Holding a self that is honest and your own.

Reached by: Identity, Belonging.

S · Stability

Acting from a steady, recognisable place.

Reached by: Stability.

The scales it will be compared against

Two published scales have been chosen for comparison. Their questions are not reproduced here: they belong to their authors and will be used from the published source, under the permission required, before any comparison is run.

Meaning in Life Questionnaire, Presence subscale

How far a person feels their life has meaning at present.

A moderate positive relationship with the purpose item would be expected. A very high relationship would suggest the purpose item adds little of its own.

General Self-Efficacy Scale

A person's general belief in their ability to cope with demands.

A moderate positive relationship with the confidence item would be expected, and a weaker one with the identity items.

What validation requires

  1. Items and scoring fixed (done)

The six items and the Index calculation are settled and used unchanged at every check-in, so answers collected now remain comparable.

  2. Repeat measurement in place (done)

Each check-in is stored as its own immutable record against the same person, which is what allows change over time to be read.

  3. Comparison scales entered under permission (still to do)

The published item wording for the Meaning in Life and Self-Efficacy scales must be entered from source, with the permission their authors require, before either is shown to anyone.

  4. Responses collected alongside the comparison scales (still to do)

A sample answering the AURIS items and both published scales at the same sitting. Nothing about agreement between them can be reported before this exists.

  5. Internal consistency and structure tested (still to do)

Whether the six items hold together, and whether they separate the way the framework says they should.

  6. Independent review (still to do)

The results read and signed off by someone outside AURIS before the word validated is used anywhere.

Take part

Draft consent wording, taken from the AURIS research ethics statement. Awaiting review before collection opens.

Taking part opens once the two comparison scales have been added with permission. Answers are only useful when all three are completed at the same sitting, so nothing is collected before then.

Withdraw your answers

How the framework itself is set out is described in the patterns from the interviews and in the published papers.
